The Discipline of Suffering

Today’s Scripture
“I will protect you with my own life, for the same person wants to kill us both” (1 Samuel 22:23).

David’s Flight Path from Saul:
David's Flight Path from Saul

Death, conspiracy and intrigue is found in today’s reading! The battle between Saul and David rages on as Saul continues to hunt down David in an attempt to take his life. One little white lie contributes to the death of 85 priests as Doeg goes on a rampage to kill the Lord’s anointed ones. Only one survivor, Abiathar, follows David and becomes the priestly staff which later leads Tabernacle worship in Jerusalem!

This time of persecution was preparation for a future time when David will be called to take the throne. He is learning to trust in God alone and he and his men are learning to fight… and fight well. Notice that as long as David sought the will of the Lord, he had protection and victory. For these many years, David could not flee from the “discipline of suffering” because God was preparing him for special work He had for him to do. Can you see your own times of suffering as spiritual preparation for a new day ahead?
