No More Manna

Today’s Scripture
“They began to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvested from the land. No manna appeared… ever again” (Joshua 5:11-12).

The battle of Jericho is one of the best known stories in the Bible. Many first hear of it as a child in Sunday School. Yet, the crossing of the Jordan River as they go in to take Jericho is equally important to the life of the Israelites and studied much less frequently. Today, we read how the people crossed the Jordan River into the promised land on dry ground after God performed a miracle with water, similar to the time the waters of the Red Sea parted when they left Egypt.

Have you ever considered the symbolism of these two “water partings?” The first, when Israel left Egypt, was a sure means of escape from the enemy. (Like Jesus’ death on the cross, this parting was a one-time escape from death). The second, when Israel enters into their promised land, was a sure provision of their inheritance. (Like Jesus’ resurrection, which gives us inheritance of new life and peace). However, the way in which they take the land… one victory after another… symbolizes the means by which they receive the full inheritance promised. For us today, our inheritance is also received day by day, victory by victory as we daily surrender our lives to the Lord.
