A Call to Moderation

Jun 29, 2015 / Bible Study / 2 COMMENTS

Today’s Scripture
“Your houses are filled with things stolen from the poor” (Isaiah 3:14).

In today’s reading, we see a stern warning to live in moderation! The attention has turned from Israel to Judah and Isaiah speaks seven woes, all relating to their use of money, which they have spent all on themselves (Isaiah 3:14), the attitude of their heart, which is full of pride (Isaiah 5:21) and corruption (Isaiah 5:23) and the use of alcohol, which they have abused to the point of sickness (Isaiah 28:8, 5:22). What a sight!

God intended Israel to be depicted as a productive vineyard, producing fruit of righteousness and justice (Isaiah 5:7), yet instead he found violence and oppression. Instead of using the blessings they received from God to be a blessing to others, they chose to spend what they had on themselves, often to the point of taking advantage of others (Isaiah 5:8). How important do you think it is to maintain a life of holy moderation?

Wow, lots of great stuff packed into these few chapters of Isaiah! Thank you for separating it out for us in detail.
