Today’s Bible Study
January 26, 2012
“God’s friendship is felt in my home” (Job 29:4).
To Find (look for):
To Mind (key point):
Job gives us a model for the source of true joy in our lives: 1. Maintaining a relationship with God is first among all things; 2. Exerting influence for the good of those around us; 3. Actively engaging in ministry to those in need; and 4. Offering words of encouragement and affirmation to everyone we meet. Everyone has times of trouble, yet when we take our eyes off ourselves and focus on someone else’s need, it’s amazing how much better we feel! Joy is experienced as we shift from self to service, pouring out our lives into the lives of others.
To Bind (apply to our lives):
Paul tells us it is an honor to share in the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings (Phil 3:10). What new thing is God doing in your life and how are you cooperating with Him to do this new thing?

Shannon, I am learning so much from this study! I hate to admit all I’ve missed in Job. I always looked at it simply as an example of how we’re to stay strong in our trust of God and His plan for our lives. But I’ve never thought of the picture of Jesus we see in Job. “By His power the sea grew calm.” (26:12) Wow! That gives me cold chills!
I’ll never look at Job the same. Can’t wait to see what’s ahead for tomorrow!
Amen to that! I am in great awe myself as we walk through Job this year to find so much of the entire gospel story in it. Next week’s videos will summarize how incredibly much is in this book (things like money, prayer, tribulation, resurrection, intercession…) and I’m amazed putting this list together. Job is one of my favorite books of the Bible!
Hey everybody! Hope you enjoyed the lesson today.
This weekend’s reading is PACKED with the gospel. In Saturday’s reading, pay close attention to Job 33.
Every time you read ‘grave’ (verse 18) or ‘death’ (verse 22) interpret this being the fate of someone without God. Then (verse 23) we see an intercessor enters the scene to save this hopeless person on his way to “death” (hell) because he cannot save himself. Jesus has arrived! “I have found a ransom for his life” (verse 24) is the ransom Jesus paid in giving His own life. Jesus provides the ransom, and because He did, we can inherit eternal life and receive resurrected bodies (see verse 25). “Bodies as healthy as a child’s, firm and youthful.” That will be us in heaven when we inherit our restored resurrected bodies! What does Jesus think about all this? “I am anxious to see you justified” (verse 32).
Bet you’ll never look at Job the same again! Praise be to God for doing such wonderful things for us!!
Enjoy your weekend, friends!
For some of us who may have a different edition of the The One Year Bible, could you please list what the reading for the day is please? Thanks! What year and edition are you using?
Hi Carolyn! Great question. We are using the One Year Chronological Bible, New Living Translation, 2007 edition. It comes in regular, large print, paperback and hardback and on Kindle.
You can see it on amazon (on sale right now for $12) by going here: http://www.amazon.com/One-Year-Chronological-Bible-NLT/dp/1414314086/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1327588899&sr=8-15
I do think you’ll get the most out of the study if you use this version of the Bible rather than a different edition. In the meantime, you can always see the readings for the day by going to my website http://shannonmullins.com/online-bible-study/ and in the right-hand column about 1/2 way down the page you’ll see a red box of the One Year Bible Online. Click the date and you can see the day’s readings.
Study on! 🙂
Great insight on the four sources of joy. I’ve never seen it that way. Love lifting my weights while listening to your teaching.
Hi Jeanette! It’s good to see you on the blog again today. Thank you for your encouragement!
What a blessing the session was to me. As you can see from the lateness of my “tuning in” I have had a long day and I was tired, but now am totally uplifted. I have studied Job in the past, but this new insight into Job as precursor to Jesus is a new and wonderful concept. Now I can see Christ at work in this oldest of stories. He is new every morning! Thank you for showing me how to look and Job, his suffering and his faithfulness, in a new light.
