The Shiloh Distribution

Today’s Bible Study

The entire community of Israel gathered at Shiloh and set up the Tabernacle” (Joshua 18:1).

How the land was distributed to the 12 Tribes:
12 Tribe Apportionments

To Find (look for):

  1. In what city were the remaining seven tribes given their allotments, and what was set up there (Joshua 18:1)?
  2. Which tribe inherited the city of Jerusalem (Joshua 18:26)?

To Mind (key point):
The entire community gathered at Shiloh and set up the Tabernacle there. Shiloh became the principle sanctuary of the Israelites during the time of the Judges for the next 100 years.

To Bind (apply to our lives):
The remaining seven tribes received their portions of land today by casting lots. In the video, we discuss how this process worked and where the practice originated. This was not an arbitrary practice, for we are to understand it as an Old Testament process which the Israelites used to determine God’s will. We do not use this practice today because we have the Holy Spirit inside of us giving us direction.

Well Shannon, I’ll be honest here…

I trudged through this morning’s reading, sipping my coffee, trying to stay awake. I knew there was no way you could find anything interesting in today’s lesson. After all, it was only a boring list of cities.

But God used you–yet again–to show me the richness of His Word, that nothing is by chance and happenstance, but that everything that happens is by His decree and His plan, even an unexciting list of cities!

    1. This was THE Shiloh! (Nope, never made the connection in my sleep-deprived state) When you mentioned Hannah and Samuel, my mind ran back to that story and the power we see in God’s miraculous provision and Hannah’s complete trust!

    2. Never thought about that verse in Proverbs in relation to the casting of lots for Israel.

    3. Never knew there were two Bethlehems.

    4. Never put 2&2 together to see that Naphtali was the place of Jesus’ ministry.

    5. And–oh my goodness–that passage in Isaiah about a Great Light coming from there!

Thank you, Shannon. Thank you, God.
