A New King

Today’s Scripture
“And the Spirit came powerfully upon David from that day on” (1 Samuel 15:3).

Ancestry of David:
Ancestry of David

In the video today, I mention Ruth is David’s grandmother and I should have said his great-grandmother.

Today, Saul was told to attack and completely destroy the Amalekites. These were the first people who attacked the Israelites in the wilderness where Moses struck the rock 500 years earlier. Today, we see their judgment coming to pass. Instead of following the Lord’s command, Saul chooses to spare the king’s life and keep the choice cattle for himself. When confronted by Samuel, his excuses are weak and display a lack of commitment to God. From then on, Samuel will not visit Saul and grieves deeply for him.

God was not surprised by Saul’s behavior and David was not His second choice as king. God used Saul’s disobedience as an occasion to implement a higher plan. At God’s instruction, Samuel anoints a new king, a shepherd boy by the name of David. Twenty-seven years after Saul leads his first battle as king, David steps onto the battlefield, still a boy, yet filled with the Spirit, is compelled to defend God’s honor in response to the taunts and sneers of a giant!
