Today’s Scripture
“The Levites must be reserved as substitutes for the firstborn sons of Israel; I am the LORD (Yahweh)” (Numbers 3:12).

Arrangement of Israel’s Camp

The book of Numbers got its name because of the census taken of the Israelites. Each of the 12 tribes (descendants of Jacob) was assigned an area to camp around the Tabernacle. This arrangement also determined the order they were to march when they moved from place to place in the wilderness.

Anyone God redeems or buys out of slavery is His very own possession and are called to serve. Like the Israelites, we too are God’s people. Do you live your life acknowledging God’s right to rule in your life? Is He both your Savior and Lord?

Do you know a reason why Judah, Reuben, Ephraim, and Dan headed the four divisions camped around the tabernacle?

And as a side note, as I saw that the tribe of Judah camps in the east, I think I remember that’s the same direction our Lord Jesus, from the tribe of Judah, will be when He returns. Thanks for another great day of study!

Great question and I’m glad you asked it…

Jewish tradition holds that Judah was represented by a lion, Reuben the face of a man, Ephraim an ox, and Dan an eagle. There is similarity here to Ezekiel’s vision during the Babylonian captivity in Ezekiel 1 (the four angels) and the angels John saw around the throne in Rev 4.
