Today’s Scripture
“Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir!” (Nahum 2:8).

 

 
Nineveh was a city founded by Nimrod back in the book of Genesis. The prophet Jonah was sent by God to Nineveh to call them to repent. Prompted by Jonah, they did repent and were spared. Our reading today continues with the rest of the story as Nahum describes their ultimate downfall due to sin. After Jonah, the people fell back into their old ways of cruelty, brutality, tyranny and violence. Nahum predicts the complete and sure fall of Nineveh, which took place in 625BC when the Medes and Babylonians invade.

 
Nineveh’s end was strange, sudden and tragic, yet not a surprise to God. Through this story, we realize the seriousness of sin and the importance God places on continuing to remain faithful to the Lord, without backsliding into old ways of sin.
